Born Constance Marie Delestowicz on July 23, 1938 in Alden Station, Pennsylvania, the only child of Helen and Joseph Delestowicz. Connie grew up in the close-knit Polish coal-mining community of Luzerne County. She graduated in 1956 from Newport Township High School, which is also where she met her future husband, Thomas Bodek.
Connie studied nursing at Temple University, becoming a registered nurse in 1959. She and Tom married the next year, and the couple settled in Johnson City, New York, where children Alan, Laurie and Daniel were born.
In 1966, Tom’s job with General Electric brought the family to Beverly, where their fourth child, Amy, was born and all of the children went to school. When the children were old enough, Connie went to work as a substitute nurse in the Beverly School District. In 1980, she took a job with Endicott College, where she remained for 30 years, providing care and comfort for ailments ranging from the serious to the trivial. Before retiring in 2010, she was a trailblazer in job sharing, splitting a nursing position with another nurse.
The family enjoyed road trips around the country, towing a pop-up camper behind the station wagon, and Connie proved adept at the tricky job of parking the combination in the tightest of campsites. After the children were grown, Connie and Tom expanded their travels to Europe, including a canal boat trip through England, visits to the Christmas markets in Germany and a genealogical research trip to Poland, where their Polish language skills were put to good use.
Connie was a meticulous housekeeper and an organized mom, known for rousting oversleeping teens with strategically timed vacuuming. She was gregarious, with an uncanny ability to strike up conversations with strangers. She enjoyed knitting, baking, and gardening and was a member of the Friendly Garden Club of Beverly.
Thomas passed away in 2012, but Connie kept on as matriarch of the Bodek clan, known to everyone in the family as Babci, the Polish word for grandmother.
She is survived by her children; Alan Bodek and his wife Martha, Laurie Smith and her husband Dana, and Daniel Bodek and his wife Joanne, all of Beverly, and Amy Bodek and her husband Michael Hewitt of Long Beach, CA; and grandchildren Christopher Bodek and his wife Justine, Amelia Bodek, Gillian Smith, Justin Smith, Ashley Bodek, Alexandra Hewitt and Annika Hewitt.
