Preps roundup: Grand Valley, Coal Ridge grab gridiron wins

The Grand Valley High School football team picked up its second win of the season Friday night at home, 37-0, over the Roaring Fork Rams of Carbondale.

The Cardinals came out strong, opening a 14-0 lead after the first 8 minutes and holding a 30-0 lead at halftime.

Junior Emilio Garcia scored three of Grand Valley’s touchdowns, one rushing, one passing and one receiving. Garcia finished the night with 162 yards rushing on 16 carries, and was a perfect five-for-five passing for 102 yards.

His 36-yard receiving touchdown came on a pass from fellow junior Miguel Rojas, who also had a receiving TD. Sophomore Jordan Cedeno scored the Cardinals’ other two rushing touchdowns.

Grand Valley improved to 2-2 in the Class 2A West, and will host Flatirons Academy in another league matchup at 1 p.m. Saturday, before closing out with the rematch against Roaring Fork on April 23.

The Rams fall to 0-4 in their first season back at the varsity football level since 2017. They host Estes Park at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Meanwhile, Coal Ridge High kept pace at 2-2 in the tough 3A West league in this one-off spring football season with a 33-16 win on the road at Montezuma-Cortez Friday night. A scoring summary and stats were not posted to MaxPreps as of Sunday.

The Titans close out the season with a road game at Steamboat Springs on Friday, followed by a home game against Aspen at 7 p.m. April 23.

Boys soccer: Glenwood 4, Rifle 1

The Glenwood Springs High boys soccer team picked up a 4-1 win on the road at Rifle Saturday to hold onto the second position in the 4A Western Slope League at 5-3 for a possible post-season bid.

The Demons scored two goals in each half of the game, and the Bears lone score came in the second half. Individual stats were not immediately available.

In other soccer action this weekend, it was Colorado Rocky Mountain School picking up a win Friday on the road at Ridgway, 1-0, but losing at Crested Butte, 2-0, on Saturday.

Girls volleyball: Coal Ridge 3, Gunnison 0

The Coal Ridge Lady Titans held off a late charge by Gunnison on the road Saturday to win in straight sets (25-12, 25-5, 25-23), keeping pace in the 3A Western Slope League volleyball standings.

“We had a great start and solid play from the team,” Coal Ridge coach Aimee Gerber said in an email. “We did get a little too complacent in the last set and had to fight back.”

Senior Brecken Guccini was 18 for 19 serving with six aces, plus nine kills and 15 digs. Fellow senior Kallie Bumgardner was a perfect 23-23 serving with four aces, plus 11 assists and seven digs.

Other key stats: Sophomore Emma Morgan, 17-18 serving, two aces, five kills and eight assists; senior Phoebe Young, six kills and 12 digs; senior Ari Cornejo, 18 digs.

Next up for the Titans (6-3 overall, 4-1 league) is an away match at Cedaredge on Tuesday, followed by a visit to Basalt on Thursday.

Other Saturday scores reported to MacPreps: Steamboat Springs 3, Glenwood Springs 2 (25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 15-25, 15-13); Aspen 3, Rifle 1 (25-21, 18-25, 25-15, 25-18).
