Tide soars in season opening win | Sports

SETH – The first win came early for the Tide.

Sherman High used a pair of 20-plus point efforts from their guards on Friday and coach Aaron Pauley’s  Tide cruised to a 67-62 win over Cross Lanes Christian at Seth on Friday night.

Dalton Rollo and Alex kirk set the tone in the opening frame as the duo poured in a combined 12 points as the Class A Tide (1-0)  took the quarter 12-9 bringing a COVID-19-delayed boys prep basketball season to an opening.

Assistant coach Dave Henderson said that it was a scrimmage last week versus Greenbrier West that helped the Tide make some adjustments before their opener.

“We picked up where left off last year playing a 2-3 zone defense and at a Class A school you have to go with what your kids work well with,” he said. “It look disastrous in that scrimmage and after the game the staff came together and said that we’re gong to start guarding people and getting up in there. The kids reacted really well to it and we ran it all week in practice. We like the progress we saw on the floor tonight. We had a different energy that transitioned over to our offense.”

He added, “Our experienced guys like Alex and Dalton really set the tone for us early tonight.”

Jacob Welch, Cameron Caldwell and Logan Green got in on the scoring effort in the second quarter and Sherman cruised to a 23-19 advantage at intermission.

CLC (0-1) came out in the third period firing as Eli Stowers and Sam Mulanax showed perimeter range but the Tide punched back.

Kirk buried a pair of 3-point buckets and Caldwell and Wyatt Kincaid joined the long-range fun with bombs of their own for the maroon and gold.

Rollo, a CVN All County selection in 2020 found himself in foul trouble in the third period but netted 13 of his 27 points in the final frame as Sherman cruised to the win. Kirk knocked down 14 of his 21 in the second half.

“We missed some easy shots on good looks but the kids didn’t get down and it didn’t affect the rest of their game,” Henderson added. “We played team ball and our guys handled themselves like a mature group tonight and we really liked what we saw. They reacted well and played their game.”

Sherman will host Midland Trail on March 11.
