Company takes over Palisades nuclear plant; wants to move waste to N.M.

A New Jersey company that has acquired the decommissioning Palisades nuclear plant in west Michigan proposes to move radioactive materials off-site during the dismantling of the plant by road, rail — and perhaps most controversially — by barge shipments on Lake Michigan.

Holtec International on Tuesday confirmed its acquisition of the Palisades plant in Covert from Entergy Corp. The deal also includes the former Big Rock Point nuclear plant near Charlevoix, which decommissioned in the early 2000s and whose site on Lake Michigan now includes only large concrete-and-steel casks holding the plant’s radioactive used fuel.
