Op-ed: Think Illinois’ clean energy bill is just a bailout for nuclear plants? You’ve got it all wrong.


By contrast, if Illinois had chosen to let the nuclear plants retire, all Illinoisans would have paid the price. Without the nuclear plants, annual energy prices for Illinois consumers over the next decade would have risen by more than$480 million, and 28,000 direct and indirect jobs would have been lost, including hundreds of our highly-skilled, well-paid union employees who run these plants at world-class levels. In the meantime, emissions and air pollution in Illinois would have risen by 70%.
