6 essential oils that your skin absolutely needs

Essential oils have been used for nearly 6,000 years, with the aim of improving a person’s health or mood. Today aromatherapy is a powerful science that we can no longer ignore. When used consciously, essential oils work magically to benefit your mind, body, and skin. There are six essential face oils that can be inculcated in your daily routine, suggests, renowned aromatherapist and Chairperson of Blossom Kochhar group of companies, Dr. Blossom Kochhar.

Jasmine Essential Oil: This popular oil is a floral aromatic oil which provides a sudden whiff of freshness and peaceful thoughts. It is a wonderful element for skincare routine because of its healing and relaxing benefits. It promotes skin elasticity and helps to delay the process of aging. It reduces dryness and irritation of the skin.

This oil can be used for facial massage. Add 2 drops of jasmine essential oil with almond oil, and massage gently on your face. After the massage, place a hot towel over your face for oil to seep in better and relax further. This will help improve the elasticity of your skin.

Sensitive Skin Oil – Every skin type requires a special oil that suits that type and combat the skin problem. One skin type that should use face oils is sensitive skin. Use a sensitive skin oil which is made from the blend of lavender oil, orange oil and chamomile oil. Lavender helps treat skin inflammations, chamomile calms & soothes skin and orange gives a glowing skin. Apply 4-5 drops of this oil on a clean face and neck every morning & night.
Rose Essential Oil: Rose essential oil is known as the Queen of oils. It has anti-inflammatory, cooling, and soothing properties. It is used as a toner and provides moisturisation for dry and dehydrated skin. It helps in rejuvenation and moisturisation of your skin. It relieves stress and harmonises the mind providing more blood circulation.

In a spray bottle, dilute 3-4 drops of Rose essential oil with water to create a homemade toner or a face mist. This helps restore freshness all through the day. Make a toner at home with rose essential oil by blending 10 drops of rose oil to 100 ml of rose water (for normal, dry & sensitive skin) or witch hazel (for oily skin). Store it in a dark bottle and use it to tone your skin every day. A toner is a must for every skin type but most important for people with oily skin as it closes the pores and maintains the ph balance of your skin.

Geranium Essential Oil: this essential oil helps in maintaining the skin elasticity. This oil increases blood circulation which improves skin elasticity and helps in regeneration of skin cells. It further helps reduce scars and spots.

Geranium essential oil is excellent for rejuvenating mature dry skin. Use it for a facial pack by mixing 1 teaspoon of milk powder with 1 tablespoon of papaya pulp with 1 teaspoon honey & 2 drops of geranium essential oil. The oil is also a great moisturiser especially for those with dry skin, a make at home moisturiser that you must try is, blend 3 drops of sandalwood oil with 1 drop of geranium oil, 1 tablespoon of almond oil and 1 teaspoon of castor oil. When you want to use it, take a few drops of this blend, apply on your face and massage it in. You can use a hot compress after and do not forget to apply a moisturiser. The reason why you should apply a moisturiser after is, it will make a protective hydrating layer and lock the moisture in your skin.

Sandalwood Essential Oil: Sandalwood essential oil has a warm, woody odour and is widely used in incense, cosmetics, soaps, and perfumes. It is rich in anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-proliferative properties. Hence, it acts as a promising treatment for acne and other skin problems like eczema, psoriasis, warts, etc. It also catalyzes the production of melanin in the skin which makes it an active ingredient in many cosmetic and skincare products. It also provides a relaxing and cooling effect on the skin.

Apart from the aromatic property, Sandalwood essential oil moisturizes and purifies the skin. This oil can be used for dry skin facial massages. It can also be used to make an exfoliator for dry skin, mix 1 large pinch of oatmeal with 1 tablespoon of fresh cream, 1 crushed almond and 2 drops of sandalwood oil. Apply the pack on a damp face, massage it gently on your face and rinse it off. The oil’s properties will not only purify your skin but will also calm your nerves and remove any sadness if you have.

Lavender Essential oil – Lavender essential oils are ultra-soothing for the skin. It is antibacterial and kills acne-causing bacteria. It prevents skin dryness and heals painful acne breakouts. Gently apply diluted lavender essential oil by dabbing it on the cleansed affected area. Allow it to dry. You can also mix a few drops of lavender essential oil to a toner or a moisturiser to use regularly.
